Alejandro Bonilla has over 20 years of experience working with Indigenous Peoples and Afro-descendant communities in Mesoamerica and other countries. He holds a law degree and a sociology degree from universities in Nicaragua, a master’s degree and a PhD in Conflict Resolution (Peace, Conflict, and Democracy) from the University of Granada, Spain, and a master’s degree in Restorative Justice from the University of Geneva, Switzerland.
In his role as Capacity Building, Governance, and Legal Advisor for the Community Program implemented by the FSC Indigenous Foundation, he leads processes aimed at consolidating the autonomy and sustainability of Indigenous communities through participatory and culturally relevant strategies. He designs and implements training plans tailored to local needs, supports the formulation of internal regulations, and strengthens traditional and modern governance structures.
He also provides legal advice on collective rights, resource management, and decision-making, ensuring that program actions are carried out in accordance with national and international regulations, integrating technical knowledge and ancestral wisdom for social cohesion, territorial defense, and conservation.
